Consent Form

You are being asked to participate in a research study.  Before you give your consent to volunteer, it is important that you read the following information and ask as many questions as is necessary for your understanding.

Investigators: Mary Gauthier (BA) (mgauthier1@toromail.csudh.edu), Elijah Arzate (earzate9@toromail.csudh.edu), and Dr. Heather Butler (PhD) (California State University, Dominguez Hills Psychology Department, 310-243-3462, hbutler@csudh.edu) invite you to participate in their research.

Purpose of the Study: The purpose of this study is to determine what factors affect the decision to report a crime. Three hundred community adults are being recruited for this study. To be eligible for this research you must able to complete the survey.

Description of the Study: If you choose to participate you will complete  a survey online consisting of questions regarding crime reporting and confidence in the police. The study will last approximately 10-12 minutes.

Risks or Discomforts: There is minimal psychological risk associated with this research. There may be discomfort while answering the questions if you have had negative experience with the police or have been the victim of a crime. You may choose to withdraw from this study at any time without penalty.

Benefits of the Study: There are no direct benefits of participating in this research other than the satisfaction of knowing you contributed to our understanding of the factors that affect crime reporting; there is no guarantee, however, that you will receive any benefits from participating in this study.

Confidentiality: Confidentiality will be maintained to the extent allowed by law.

Incentives to Participate: Community adults will have the option to be entered for a chance to win a $20 Amazon gift card upon completion of the survey.

Voluntary Nature of Participation: Participation in this study is voluntary. Your choice of whether or not to participate will not influence your future relations with California State University, Dominguez Hills. If you decide to participate you are free to withdraw your consent and stop your participation at any time without penalty or loss of benefits to which you are entitled.

Your consent below indicates that you have read the information in this document and have had a chance to ask any questions about the study you may have. It also indicates that you agree to be in the study and have been told that you can change your mind and withdraw your consent at any time. You may request a copy of this consent form by contacting the investigators. You have been told that by reading this consent form you are not giving up any of your legal rights.
